Bridges of Words : A Youth-Led Movement for Literacy Empowerment of Street Children in Surabaya

SDGs Goal: 4. Quality Education, 10. Reduced Inequalities, 16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Rana is a 17 years old student of Senior High School. Her desire to create a community that provides literacy support for vulnerable groups is the result of her enthusiasm being a volunteer and her admiration for books. Focusing on research fields also makes her realize how important literacy is and how grateful she is to have the culture of literacy since she was born. But then, she realizes that not everyone has the same privilege to the culture of literacy. Encouraged by her concern to the literacy rate in Indonesia, she decided to take action.

After an observation to the of vulnerable groups, she initiates a collaboration with one of the communities that advocates around 210 street children across her hometown, “Save Street Child Surabaya” (SSCS). With the aims to foster a love for reading among street children who have limited access to educational resources and forming the pioneers to continue this literacy project. The rundown of 5 project’s activities that will be held on 5 branches of SSCS is involving read aloud to form their own opinions ;a story telling relay to build their confidence; and a quiz with awarding session to boost their competitive soul. But the most important thing is creating a supportive learning environment, making literacy fun and interactive.

She also plans to collaborate with the government to provide comfortable public learning spaces; cooperate with university lecturers as the trainers of the future pioneers; and team up with educational influencers as a motivator.
