Wherever and whoever needs our help, The Garden of Hope (GOH) will be there.

In order to reach every victim of sexual and gender violence, GOH has developed various programs that provide help to those in need, such as for victims of intimate partner violence/domestic violence, sexual abuse and harassment prevention, child and youth companionship, multiple discrimination and gender violence prevention, and immigrants. Having developed our services, advocacy, and public engagement over many years, we seek to foster diverse values and to create a supportive and friendly environment. We are also committed to building relationships between people of different genders. We believe in diversity and respect the differences among us.

Over the course of our work and development, we have remained steadfast in our founding mission to put an end to gender violence, achieve gender equality, and fight for justice for all genders everywhere in Taiwan.

GOH hopes that, from the day of birth, nobody will be excluded for their gender; nobody will be expelled from school for being pregnant; nobody will be discriminated against at work for their gender; nobody will fall victim to violence due to an argument with their partner; nobody of old age will be abandoned for any reason.

Let’s work towards a future in which all genders are treated with respect.

Service Result

Every year, GOH serves approximately 25,000 people through over 310,000 instances of help.
We provide not only aid but also companionship, direction for the future, and assistance toward making meaningful life changes.

68%

68% of women we have helped have reduced their risk of being exposed to violence or have escaped violent environments.

76%

76% of female victims of violence we have helped have found work and gradually become financially stable and independent.

75%

After undergoing professional counseling, 75% of children we have helped who witnessed domestic violence increased their ability to protect themselves both in and outside their homes.

GOH has an SROI score of 8 for its influence on people’s lives.

For the over 30 years of GOH’s operations, what impacts has it had and how successful has it been?
In 2018, GOH collaborated with a social impact advisor. Following months of data analysis and research, it was evaluated as the first non-profit organization in all of Taiwan to have a social return on investment.

GOH’s SROI score for 2015-2017 was 8, which means that every dollar of investment generated a net social value of eight-fold. Over those three years, GOH’s social value reached NT$11,347,679,647.
GOH provides not only aid to those in need but also a support network, companionship, direction for the future, and help in transforming lives.

How can we put an end to gender violence?

Why GOH is committed to service and advocacy

Upon encountering difficulties in our social work, such as being unable to find solutions in the established legal or administrative systems, we try to create dialogue with the government through other means to show the government the practical needs of the people we serve and to improve our social structure and systems.

Over the years, our advocacy work and social service have gone hand in hand. Advocacy is not only pushing for policies but working to better educate the general public. Misconceptions and misunderstandings in society often arise from a lack of understanding, hence the need for active communication and dialogue.

Only with consistent advocacy and by promoting public awareness can we gradually overturn the general prejudices in society and create a friendlier environment for everyone. This way, everyone we serve will have all the resources they need to move forward, and others will become more understanding and supportive of them.

How do we achieve this? Multiple attempts from multiple angles

There are many different kinds of advocacy and ways to promote public awareness. To this end, GOH is constantly exploring new approaches and innovating existing ones. Other than working to amend the law, submitting proposals, being part of committees, starting petitions, etc., we also hold press conferences, organize parades, collect signatures, and write letters.

In terms of public education, besides giving talks at schools, communities, businesses, and government agencies, we hold/take part in various forums, outdoor activities (e.g., runs, street fairs), stage performances, play-readings, a series of activities for Girls’ Day, and activities at Girls’ Space and the Aher Gender and Sexuality Educational Center. This is how we approach the general public to share about the work we do, the goal being to let more people know about our vision of a society without gender violence and our mission to create a society where people work together to achieve gender justice.

Make a difference with us

As someone we served in the past once said, “For every step I take forward, I fall three steps back. But I’ll keep moving forward because I know people are by my side supporting me!”

Everybody can make a difference on the road to gender justice. Donations are one way of supporting our work, but you can also help out by liking our Facebook page, participating in any of the various events we organize, and joining our No Victims Blamed campaign. Your participation and support will be motivation for our continued work, helping us on our way to making an even greater impact on society.
