The Playback Theater, also known as “Barefoot Alice” in Mandarin was founded in 2005 when The Garden of Hope introduced the Vagina Monologues locally to Taiwanese audiences. In comparison with the American counterparts where most actors are survivors, we yet had survivors share their personal stories through a theatrical medium.
Therefore, with the mission to nourish and empower advocates, Josephine Lin the theatrical therapist for Taiwan’s Vagina Monologues initiated the “A person A story” experimental theater group which started of with 4 founding members who brought along their their friends, clients referred by the GOH, staff members from social welfare organizations. The Playback theater eventually became a weekly theater group performing for the greater social cause.
The mission and value of the Playback Theater
The theater’s Chinese name, Barefoot, signifies that the members are all amateurs to theater. They gather with the common consensus of servicing survivors of sexual violence. The group envisions to tell and act stories to raise awareness on gender equality.
