The Garden of Hope Foundation organized two Asian Girls Campaign parallel events in New York on March 16, 2017:
1. From Survivors to Changemakers: Asian girl activists overcoming trauma
2. Read Your Pain – Monologues from social media
Asian girl activists from Taiwan, the Philippines, India, and other countries in the region shared stories of how they have overcome gender violence, trauma, and discrimination to become activists for the human rights of girls.
Additionally, the viral growth of the #MeToo hashtag in 2017 revealed the true extent of the epidemic of workplace sexual assault and harassment, shaking the entertainment and other industries to their core. In 2016 in Taiwan, a teenage girl launched her own campaign – Read Your Pain – for survivors of violence to share their stories on social media. The platform spawned into a public performance of a selection of the stories in powerful and moving monologues. The parallel event Read Your Pain, with videos and monologues, was presented by the founder, Victoria Hwang, who is also a survivor of sexual violence.
