Gender Education

After thirty years of service, the Garden of Hope Foundation (GOH) has discovered that tailored services are important, but if we truly want to rid the world of gender violence, we must eliminate the rigid prejudices and myths rooted in society.

In order to do this, we must start with education. Through education, we can challenge people’s gender stereotypes and introduce new and different ideas on people’s concepts of gender. In doing so, we can prevent gender prejudices and discrimination and perhaps have the opportunity to end gender-based violence forever. Clearly, gender education is important preventive work.

Different Channels of GOH Gender Education

In June 2004, Taiwan announced the implementation of the Gender Equity Education Act, which formally incorporated gender education into school syllabi and requires schools to give students at least four hours of gender equality classes or activities per semester.

As a result, GOH has received nearly 1,000 invitations from schools to give related lectures. We have thus had the opportunity to go to schools and discuss various gender issues with students. This allowed them to truly get to know each other, and since we presented different genders equally, the students gained greater insight into themselves and other people, becoming able to see true diversity and learn to respect differences.

However, such education must not be limited to schools. GOH continues to develop its diverse gender education program and hopes that more people will encounter and develop an interest in gender issues through stage performances, empowerment workshops, playback theater, marathons, and gender educational experiences. Perhaps then, we can break down gender stereotypes, cultivate gender sensitivity, and together create a society that welcomes every gender.
