Sabnam is a 17-year-old student at St. Xavier’s College in Kathmandu, Nepal. Engaged in various initiatives focusing on children, girls, and eco-friendly environments, Sabnam’s activism extends from local to international platforms, including representing Nepal at the Global Girls Leader Advisory Group (GGLAG) organized by UNICEF.
With the project titled “Greening Pockets: ‘Small Changes, Big Impacts,” Sabnam addresses the issue of unmanaged plastic waste in semi-urban areas, particularly focusing on the improper disposal of biodegradable waste and the adverse effects on the local community’s environment and health. Sabnam’s project aims to reduce plastic waste, enhance greenery, and raise awareness about the importance of waste management and eco-friendly practices. She plans to achieve this through a series of initiatives such as awareness sessions, competitions, plantation and sanitation campaigns, and workshops on plastic reuse.
Sabnam plans to collaborate with stakeholders, organizations, and local authorities, prioritize youth involvement, encourage acceptance of change, and expand the project to neighboring communities. Promotional efforts will involve using social media platforms, leveraging organizational networks, utilizing local news outlets, and drawing support from international forums like GGLAG.
By addressing the issue of plastic waste at the grassroots level, Sabnam aims to create a significant and lasting impact on the environment and community well-being, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the land and promoting systematic waste management practices for the welfare of both humans and the planet.
