We are very pleased to share the exciting news that our former CEO at Garden of Hope, Chi Hui-Jung (紀惠容), has been elected for a seat on the National Human Rights Commission for the Taiwanese Government Control Yuan.

🌟Lighting the way for human rights in Taiwan

We are pleased to share the exciting news that our former CEO, Chi Hui-Jung (紀惠容), has been elected to Taiwan’s new National Human Rights Commission.

Chi is a trailblazer for women’s rights in Taiwan and a key player in advocating for laws to prevent gender-based violence. In the past she pioneered initiatives to establish women’s shelters in Taiwan, and empower girls through the Formosan Daughter Awards. Chi continues to speak out on issues from human trafficking, child prostitution, and teenage motherhood in Taiwan.

Her election to the National Human Rights Commission is a testament to her determination and will to stand up for human rights in Taiwan.

“I am thrilled to be part of Taiwan’s first National Human Rights Commission,” said Chi, “this is an important step for Taiwanese NGO’s participation in the national human rights plan. For Taiwan, and for myself, I hope we can both be strong!”

The National Human Rights Commission is under the Control Yuan, which is responsible for monitoring other branches of government to uncover corruption and uphold best practices.

Founded last year, the National Human Rights Commission is a ten-member committee that will investigate human rights abuses, propose law reform, and promote human rights education.
Chen Chu (陳菊) is the newly elected president of the Control Yuan and head of the Commission. Of the ten seats, seven are held by Control Yuan members, while two will be filled by rotating members on one-year tenures.

“The establishment of Taiwan’s first National Human Rights Commission based on the Paris Principles is a significant step for Taiwan,” said Chi, “I feel both excited and apprehensive as I know that God has entrusted me with this important responsibility and I pray that He will protect my purpose and strengthen my work.”
