Since 2016, GOH has been working together with the All Japan Women’s Shelter Network to exchange and share experiences in political advocacy and implementing domestic violence prevention mechanisms. The network has even previously sent scholars to Taiwan to learn more about how shelters are run and the workings of Taiwan’s domestic violence prevention system. Extremely impressed with GOH’s comprehensive services and campaigns for legislative reforms, the scholars stated that the Taiwan model is an important reference point for Japan’s own efforts to eradicate domestic violence.
“We are determined to push for reform here in Japan, and we think the Taiwan model works extremely well. Therefore, we are studying it in-depth” – Chairperson of the All Japan Women’s Shelter Network and assistant professor at Hiroshima University, Chisato Kitanaka (北仲千里).
In 2020, there was growing conversation in Japan over legal reforms related to sexual assault in the criminal code, laws on domestic violence, and special acts on support for shelters and victims. The information GOH had compiled on the Taiwanese domestic abuse prevention system, gender equality legislation, and advocacy materials were important reference materials during this discussion.
