Aher Gender and Sexuality Educational Center

“Umm…I haven’t quite figured out how to answer that question yet.”

“There’s so much information. Which is right for me?”

As a parent or educator watching your child/students grow up and develop a growing curiosity for new things, are you ever overwhelmed by their questions? When you are at a total loss for what to say, it can be frustrating, but GOH has prepared a space for you to have these conversations, a place where you can practice constructive dialogue and grow with your child/students – the Aher Gender and Sexuality Educational Center.

A space to talk about gender and sexuality

At the end of 2019, the first Aher Gender and Sexuality Center was established in Changhua. In June 2020, a second center was opened in Hualien. The centers were the first gender and sexuality educational spaces in Taiwan to have been created by a private organization. By the end of 2020, over 2,000 children had been to the centers.

In this space, no matter who you are, you can ask questions that you might normally be too afraid to ask and make use of the large amount and diversity of equipment in a safe environment. We hope that everyone sees it as a comfortable space.

What can you learn when you come to Aher?

Anyone curious about gender and sexuality:

What is puberty? Other than female and male, are there other genders that I don’t know about? Is everything the internet says true? Who can I ask about the changes in my body? You are welcome to visit the Aher Center to discuss and share your questions! We have cute, cuddly toys, 3-D life-like models, and other specially designed educational equipment. Let’s find the answers together!

Parents:

As a parent, watching your child growing up so fast and becoming more curious about the world around them, you can sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed. The market may be full of educational books to help answer your child’s burning questions, but when faced head on, you often find yourself at a loss for words, especially when it comes to questions about gender and sexuality. The Aher Centers are equipped with all kinds of educational materials and professional equipment developed by GOH. Most importantly, everyone on staff is well-prepared to help you and your child learn together and knows how to best facilitate gender and sexuality education suited to parents and their children. Your child’s needs are our core concern. We respect and value your child as if they were our own.

Teachers:

This immersive-experience space and the lessons provided guide children in exploring their bodies and preparing for physical changes. They can explore interpersonal relationships, emotional issues, and family interaction, and break down myths about gender and sexuality within our culture. We hope that children can find answers here that they cannot find at school or home.

A unique immersive experience

GOH has drawn from the sex education experiences of several South Korean non-profit women’s groups in creating the distinctive Mirror Room and Uterine Chamber, places which respectively symbolize the notions of looking aftr oneself and returning to the womb. The Mirror Room encases the viewer in mirrors, allowing a view of the self from all angles. The Uterine Chamber, made of red cloth, creates an image of the uterus: while standing inside, it is as if you have returned to your mother’s womb. With the physiological structure and fertility-related audio-visual media, the chamber is a complete immersive experience.

Helping you and your child create a more equal future

GOH strives to uphold the four principles of autonomy, health, equality, and respect, placing them at the heart of our work at the Aher Center. We believe that the sooner a child learns about gender and sexuality, the better gender-based violence will be prevented. By first getting to know yourself, you can then learn to respect people who are different from you and understand how every human is beautiful. Book an experience at the center now!
