The #MeToo movement has shown us the impact of the social media movement on advocating gender equality. Nowadays, the high use of social media has become the best choice for young girls to speak up and reduce the gender digital divide. How will social media movements change the future of Asian girls, where patriarchal cultures are still widely entrenched? We will invite Asian girls who successfully use social media to speak out for themselves, organizations working on technology empowerment, and platforms that focus on gender equality to discuss how social media could accelerate the pace of gender equality.

From Visible to Invisible: Asian CSOs Confronting Digital GBV

Technology-facilitated and digital gender-based violence are increasing across Asia due to rapid digitization. Much of the violence women experience offline is replicated online but has evolved in more complex and diverse forms. Research from the UN indicates that survivors rarely report digital violence in fear of reprisals from perpetrators and social repercussions and a lack of confidence in the judicial process. Asian CSOs play crucial roles to mediate among stakeholders to tackle this issue. We invite CSOs across Asia to share their experiences, research statistics, and challenges in helping survivors, advocating for legislation reform, and online safety for women and girls.

This session will be conducted in English. Seats are limited. Come register soon.

Technological innovation has become a vital part of the fight against gender-based violence globally. In this event, regional representatives of the Global Network of Women’s Shelters (GNWS) will share reports on breakthroughs and concerns in their region, highlighting the opportunities technology brings and its darker side: tech and digital abuse. New publications, tools and initiatives of how technology contributes to women’s safety and ending gender-based violence will be presented, including a demonstration and update on the status and future ambitions in the GNWS’ own technological innovation: Lila.help, the number one online international directory of trustworthy support services for victims of gender-based violence.
